Das Wichtigste im Internet sind die Informationen. Und das Wichtigste an einem Kunden sind die Informationen, die man über diesen sammeln kann.
Beim User-Tracking identifizieren Online-Vermarkter den Browser des Users, können feststellen von welcher Web-Seite er kommt, welche Seiten des Angebotes er wie lange nutzt, welche Suchmaschine er mit welchen Suchkriterien gefüttert hat, und letztendlich kann auch festgestellt werden, mit welchem Ziel die Seite verlassen wird.
Der gläserne Surfer ist also keine Zukunftsmusik, sondern bereits Realität.
In der Regel interessieren die Daten jedoch nur für statistische Auswertungen, und nicht, um über einen speziellen Surfer ein besonderes Profil anzulegen.
Für das User-Tracking werden die unterschiedlichsten Software-Produkte eingesetzt. Sie ermöglichen den Gestaltern der Internet-Auftritte eine gezieltere Führung der Besucher. Außerdem können so die interessanten Angebote von den weniger interessanten getrennt werden. So besteht die Möglichkeit, den Internetauftritt laufend zu optimieren.
